Regular price $360.00 $0.00
The Factory/Gasoline La Jolla Concert Poster, April 21-22, 1967. Two-color lithograph, 20"W x 14"H. Unframed, in mint condition.

The Factory played at Gasoline, a 21-and-up psychedelic “happening” in the all-ages Hi-Ho Club. Set up at the defunct eight-lane La Jolla Bowl bowling alley at Fay and Prospect, 7853 Fay Avenue, La Jolla CA. Psychedelic light show by The Unicorn. [Unicorn Cinema.]  Poster by Evelyn Berdel. Printed by San Francisco's Double-H Press, San Francisco.

Her husband Richard was associated with The Unicorn Cinema. Producers unknown, but Hi-Ho Clubs in La Jolla (La Jolla Bowl) and El Cajon (in Art's Roaring Twenties, Parkway Bowl) were part of a chain run by Lee and Susan Graeber. At the time, they lived on their yacht in San Diego, and he ran the business from his black limousine.

The Factory with Lowell George (Mothers of Invention, Little Feat) was the first of three advertised Friday / Saturday happenings at Gasoline. From the ad run in UCSD's student newspaper, Gasoline promised to be quite the Fillmore Auditorium freakout.

"We have made a place that will engulf you. We have prepared a barrage of lights, a sea of sound, in which you will float. Having freedom as our goal we have been unable to accept the restrictions which authorities put upon minors. Be 21 and we will discover one another. There will be melting, and incense, and flower children, and dancing, and music from the cities where music cries out in the pain of birth. We will float like an island. Everything begins on Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m., and each Friday and Saturday from then we will explode before your eyes, and like a flower in slow motion, we will pass through color and change to life. It will cost you $2.50 to get in, and each week we will have one of those light-streaked experimental bands which will play the explosion. 1) FACTORY; 2) COUNTRY JOE AND THE FISH; 3) THE PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY. We have the posters you have looked for, and they speak of our future..."
